I was just reading another question asking if fear was a good thing in Christianity. I started to answer that fear is never a good thing, but then it occurred to me that I guess it can be when it keeps you from hurting yourself or getting yourself killed.

In what cases is fear good?

Fear is a basic instinct that most living creatures have which as you pointed out causes a reaction against danger. There are two reactions that can occur. They are called fight or flight. When the bible talks about fearing God it is not talking about this same type of instinctive fear. It says that to fear God is to hate evil.

In religion, fear should not be a motivating factor.

In some situations, fear is a good instinct to have because it protects you from dangerous situations. Other than that, you shouldn't fear consequences of your religious choices.
