My neice has OCD, she is 9. She does the same things. She also counts in her head, over and over and worries about germs. Please tell your folks to get him into therepy. It will really help him deal with this. It is very hard for him, he does not want to do these things but feels like he has to. Sometimes they feel like something bad will happen if they don't repeat the same behavior over and over. It is very frustrating for them. If you and your parents are having a hard time dealing with it, think about how it would feel to be living inside of his body. He deals with it 24 hours a day. Please seek out some help. You can find it free of charge through your state if you need to. I know they have some medicines that can help if your parents want to consider this. There are millions of people with OCD, he is not alone. If you ever watch "deal or no deal" the host, Howie Mandel has OCD, that is why he will never shake the contestants hands, he hits them with his fist. Again, please get some help so you can all do the best for your brother.

Your parents have obviously identified him with having this disorder therefore should be more accepting of it. I am sure it may cause some embarrassment but it is their son. It is not uncommon for people with OCD to have an odd pattern in which things are done. Your parents better get used to it as this type of thing will be going on for many years to come. They should seek the help of someone who might specialise in OCD so they can see that he is not the only one and there are probably worse cases around. While it may be difficult as long as he gets love and support all should be fine.

I would say have him checked by a doctor first. It may be something else, like autism or a learning disability of some sort. If your doctor rules those things out then ask him to refer you to or recommend a psychiatrist or therapist. I've suffered from (a somewhat mild) case of OCD for many years and found that it was much easier to curb my OCD impulses when I better understood why I had them. Untreated, OCD can worsen until it begins to seriously disrupt your daily life.

people with OCD each have different "rituals" they feel they need to do. Touching things a certain amount of time is actually very common. Rituals are different for everyone with OCD. Counseling can help.

People with OCD need to be in therapy to get their compulsive activities under control. With therapy he will be able to stop needing to feel like he has to touch stuff multiple times.
