Jesus Head to Head Against Buddha; Very Interesting?

Question

No one would argue that Buddha and Jesus were two of the most righteous men in history. Both were highly respected and worshipped even now that they are long gone.

Buddha was never claimed as possessing supernatural powers or capable of performing miracles; He was rather known for His indepth morality and kind soul.

Jesus was known for His supernatural powers and the miracles He was capable of performing.

When we look at these two great men we must wonder who indeed was the more righteous man.

Buddha was a real person and no one would disclaim His actual existence. His doings would neither be disclaimed as they were no miracles.

Jesus on the other hand is still ambigious in terms of His actual identity. He probably existed, but was He as people claimed Him to be as? Was He just a man but portrayed as a God?

No disrespect for Jesus, but in my book Buddha wins hands down as the most righteous man ever to walk the surface of the earth due to His credability and authenticity on the proclaims of His actual indentiy and existence.

Jesus was more or less portrayed while Buddha was for real in every inch of His stories.

Ofcourse if Jesus was like proclaimed then He would win; but the fact is that He most probably wasn't.

It is very hard to give Jesus the win through faith alone. I just can't do that.

You are correct in stating that Buddha and Jesus were two of the most righteous men in history. And you seem to have concluded that the Buddha's existence seems more credible than Jesus'. Is this based on your disbelief of Jesus' power and miracles? If so, there are stories of Buddha that also tend to create disbelief, such as:

According to the legends about Buddha's birth, the baby began to walk seven steps forward and at each step a lotus flower appeared on the ground.

or

When Buddha was meditating, it began to rain heavily and a huge king cobra came out and coiled his body seven times around the Buddha to keep him warm and placed his hood over the Buddha’s head to protect him from the rain. After seven days the rain stopped and the snake changed into a young man who paid his respects to the Buddha.

Do you disbelieve these accounts? They are part of Buddhist teaching.

To the question of Jesus' existence:

The accounts about Jesus were written within living memory of his existence: Gospel of Matthew (probably written between 65 and 90 AD) and the Gospel of Luke (probably written between 65 and 100 AD).

A couple of Non Christian accounts of Jesus include:

Flavius Josephus (AD 37?-101?) mentions Jesus - Antiquities, Book 18, ch. 3, par. 3. "Now there was about this time Jesus, a wise man, if it be lawful to call him a man; for he was a doer of wonderful works, a teacher of such men as receive the truth with pleasure."

and

Tacitus (A.D. c.55-A.D. c.117, Roman historian) mentions "Christus" who is Jesus.


Buddhist texts were written hundreds of years after Buddha passed away (around 100BC).

So evidence regarding Jesus' existence is beyond a doubt.


But I suppose the question of who is the greatest should be answered by the very person you advocate. Buddha did make a prediction. It was of a great person called Maitreya: Meaning either 'The World Unifier' or simply 'The Friend.' A very human God-Man whom Buddha predicted will be a greater Buddha than himself.

The prophecy of the arrival of Maitreya is found in the canonical literature of all Buddhist sects, (Theravāda, Mahāyāna, Vajrayāna) and is accepted by most Buddhists as a statement about an actual event.

As you said, with the only two options being Buddha and Jesus (who was born much later), it is logical to conclude that the very God-man that Buddha was talking about and who would have the God-man influence on the world would be Jesus - the Son of God, who according to the New Testament will return again to judge the living and the dead. (2 Timothy 4:1)

If you read the Holy Bible, it tells you exactly what Jesus did for man kind. He came to help and serve others, He died to save human kind! Not many people would do that, plus He was the only one worthy to do so. He did not use His 'supernatural powers', He depended on God. Also His disciples did some miracles, it was their faith in God that they could do these things. One example where the disciples could not heal a person because they had a lack of faith, so Jesus was the only one who could heal that person. God loves us so much and that He sent Jesus. Jesus showed us what God is really like...

For example, when He was being tempted by Satan to turn these stones in to bread (Matthew 4:3), He did not. Instead He defeated him by the Word of God, "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God." Matthew 4:4 (NKJV).

"With God men it is impossible, but not with God; but for with God all things are possible." Mark 10:27 (NKJV).

His identity, He is the Messiah. He said "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me" John 14:6 (NKJV).

Jesus is alive today, He is our mediator between us and God the Father. Buddha can't answer our prayers because he is resting in his grave...

Humans promoted Jesus to God due to self-serving intention (to make a savior out of him and make him more palatable to other groups) or simple misunderstanding. What men like Jesus and Buddha came here to teach us is about Christ Consciousness and Buddha Consciousness. That is becoming a soul so evolved that it can exist in human form and be as spiritually powerful as a Christ or Buddha. Not that a god could come in human form or a human could be God though.
Treating masters like these as role models of how to behave puts us on this right path. Not making an evolved human who came to teach by *example* into a divine being we could never hope to become like.
In creating that gap, the need for a savior arose. For otherwise humans had no chance of reaching that level of goodness. The tragic thing is that some people are now spiritually disabled due to this concept because they can't or won't see their own potential.

No disrespect to you, but I think Jesus showed up very real in stories about him. And the miracles really aren't the most important part of the gospels. I'd still follow Jesus even if he hadn't done any miracles during his lifetime. It's true, though, many Christians harp on the miracles and forget the teachings of the one who performed them.
