im in college and in my philosophy class the professor was trying to prove that cowarliness is not valued by anyone in the world and he said "what country in the world glorifies cowards?" and a boy decides to make a silly wisecrack and yells "Iraq and Afganistan."
I'm the quiet person in the back who never says anything, and I stood up and said "EXCUSE ME?" the teacher was shocked, and the boy tried apologizing after class was over.
I hope he learned his lesson and doesnt say ignorant thinkgs liek that.
and you should stand up and say something too.

No one can truly know how you feel unless they have faced racism, whether it is themselves, close family, or friends. Personally it's shocking and it hurts, and no one should get away with think that it’s ok. But to answer your question I don't think you could do much now because you don't know who said it and it would be wrong if you guessed and accused the wrong person. Maybe you could explain the situation to your teacher and ask your teacher if you can present a small quick (5 minutes or whatever) speech about what jihad really is, just so your math class and or who ever said it can realize that his or her idea is wrong. But again make sure to make clear to her that you’re not blaming anyone, and since you don’t know who said it this is the best way of correcting the info. regarding jihad. Hopefully your teacher will understand. This person seems to have ignorance and hate, so yelling at him or her/anyone would just fuel his or her ignorance about Islam. Rather so by giving him or her the real facts maybe you can enlighten him or her. I hope all goes well, and remember to keep and cool head. Peace, please let me know what happens.

Okay people have we really come to a point in society when people have lost all of their rights to be stupid? I mean look at this post and tell me that someone isn't a little up tight about a classmate "clowning around" in the classroom". I don't know how old these people are but come on people, kids (and adults) are going to be just that. and besides that does anyone really believe that making a "bomb" noisee is really a threat? Such a big threat that it even constitutes being placed on this forum? Look, I am sorry that you were so offended by a little nois and a single word. but maybe we all need to lighten up just a little.......

First, if you want to be taken seriously you need to act and behave in a mature manor. You should go to your parents explain what happened and explain you were upset by this. There are civil rights in the United States and one of these rights would be that you are entitled to an education free of prejudice.
I do not understand why it would not be an option to tell the teacher.
My niece was in a school in New York and she has long beautiful hair and the kids in her 4 grade class were calling her Pocahontas and the teacher would laugh. She is not Native American and was very upset by this because they were more or less teasing and the teacher found it funny. That is until she told her parents who brought this to the attention of the school. It is not fair to hinder any ones education with the fear of being segregated because of race or religious preference.

As salaamu 'alaikym, my friend.

Insha'Allah, you might be taking things a bit too personally and making more of an event that you should.

Insha'Allah, in some instance, calling attention to the inapropriate action re-inforces the same by giving it attention. Not providing the re-inforcement (albeit negative re-inforcement) will diminish the behavior. It is called behavior modification and it works.

Insha'Allah, remember, too, you are not in charge of the whoel world or the behavior of the same. You are in charge of you.

Insha'Allah, you don't have to be correct, right or perfect all of the time. Relax.

Ma'a salaam

Well this post has no question in it but ok. Im sorry to hear about this little bit of blatant racism. Unfortunately Muslims are the target of a lot of racism.

I would just ignore their ignorance. some people just dont know what they say is the 'wrong thing to say' if you get upset about it and tell someone ((besides a close friend)) people might want to bother you more about it, so I would just let it be. like I said sometimes people will be people, and one day when they say it infront of the wrong person ((their boss or someone they value the opinion of)) they will get a rude awakening. so just hold tight until that day and dont stoop to their level. good luck and stay strong!! :-) ((ohh and that guy about me that wrote that really long post is writing it on a lot of people's questions..weird I dunno)))

Sister, bring your concerns to the teacher. For the teacher to allow this student to do this is wrong and it is promoting a tense environment.. If the teacher is of no help bring it to the President of the school.

I don't see why a Muslim should be offended by that.....Jihad has certainly been responsible for enough terrorist acts, utilizing bullets and bombs. What I don't understand, though, is if Muslims are not in favor of Jihad, why don't they speak out against it so that the rest of us will know the average Muslim doesn't agree with Jihad? I think the reason they don't is because they do. It is, after all, commanded in the Quran.

So what do you do? You may talk to the kid who made the comment and explain to him that you don't believe in Jihad. I'm sorry, but it's my guess that if you sleep in an onion patch, you are going to smell like an onion....so he may not believe you. It would be nice if everyone were kind to everyone else, if Jihad didn't believe in using bombs to terrorize those they class as being in the "belly of the beast". But unfortunately, that's not likely to happen in this lifetime. You aren't too young to learn that.

2 days ago i was in algebra class and this chick started to talk about a Muslim girl in my school who doesn't believe in deodorant since her cultural beliefs are in having your natural smell. she was being very stereotypical, my teacher is Christian, she had enough of her racism and she stood up for her.. i was really surprised.. people will always be ignorant about something.. i can say stuff about her culture.. anyone can say something offensive about anybody's culture.. if i were you id just let it slide but if whoever keeps doing it again i would talk to the teacher after class and say youre offended on whoever said it.
