You can put your number on the do not call list, as suggested. It does take time to go into effect though. Also it does not stop all calls.
Here's what I do for those that slip by: You have to figure that time is money for them, and every minute they waste talking to you, is a minute they aren't finding some sap that's interested, so... I chatter, non stop and super fast. I tell them about my day, how my dog is doing, what my current worries are as well as my aches and pains, and any other mundane chatter I can think up. They almost always ask, "how are you today?" and that's my opening.
About 2 years ago, when I was dating my husband, one called at about 9:10. I was raised you don't call people after 9 except in emergencies, so I was prepared for the worst. Imagine my surprise... a telemarketer! I promptly asked him if he was dead? Was he dying? Did he know what time it was? and gave him the lecture of his life on manners and telephone etiquette. Never did hear back from him or his company! My husband just sat here during my tirade with his jaw hanging wide open! When I was finished he busted out laughing and said I was welcome to answer his phone any time I wanted.

My parents bought that Telezapper and whenever a database is calling you, it will automatically send a signal into their computer either saying Invalid number or deleting you. At first I thought it was just another marketing ploy but it works great. within a year they hardly get any telemarketing calls.

If you have Caller ID, when you don't know the number, answer the phone with a business-sounding name, like, "Smith and Sons, can I help you?" They're not supposed to call businesses, so they'll hang up and take you off the list.

Immediately ask for their phone number so you can call them back. They don't have one. Then ask for their home phone number so you can call them while they are eating dinner.
Also the National do not call registry.
