Indoor cats still get fleas.
Fleas can enter houses as easily as any other bug - and the do because they're attracted to the warmth of houses. They sense meals by body heat, the C02 produced by our breath, and by the vibrations of movement.
You need to get a proper flea treatment from your vets, like Frontline, Revolution or Advantage. Do not use the flea treatments available in pet stores, because they don't work any many are dangerous.

People could have brought the fleas in on their clothing or from just walking up to your house. Fleas can be on the lawn or garden from other animals"visiting" the area. Another possibility is that the fleas were lying dormant in the floor boards in the house and when the cats came, the fleas found a host.
Remedy. Spray the house yourself with foggers or have it done professionally. Make sure you take all pets out of the area when this is being done. Make sure that the front and backyards are also treated. Buy Advantage in tubes from the vet and follow directions. (Do not use over the counter meds for fleas or worms as they can be deadly to pets.)
This will work.

You can actually bring them in on you and your clothes from your yard! The best way to get rid of them is to either bomb your house with a fogger or hire a pest control company to spray! This will cost more $ though! The fleas won't come back right away but they will eventually if you do not continue to take care of the problem! Fleas are disgusting though. they can actually get bad enough to where every time you walk on the floor, you will look down and see 10 fleas on your feet. They multiply so fast. Once you spray/bomb your house, you need to vaccum EVERY DAY! They larva in the carpet are not effected by the sprays and will hatch 2 weeks later and you will have fleas all over again if you do not VACCUM! Good Luck!!! :)

Your vet is a great source of information and can get you an appropriate flea treatment from your cat.
DO NOT USE FLEA PRODUCTS SOLD IN STORES. There is no regulations and many of the products are not safe and are not as effective as what your vet would give you.
They may have had fleas awhile, but it just got bad enough to notice now.
Good luck. A phone call to your vet is free. Take advantage of that. Don't try any home remedy or store bought product on your cat. You will really need to clean your house over the next few weeks.

The fleas outside will jump onto your shoes and clothing to get brought inside. And think about how small they are - they can get into any crack at the bottom of the door. They are blood suckers and body heat/heat means dinner. They will feed off of you if possible. You need to have them on a preventive even though they are inside. and be sure to put a cat-safe flea spray/foam on the carpet before you vacuum the carpet as they hide there.

Stray animals and wildlife (including birds) bring them (fleas and eggs) to your yard, and you track them in on your clothes and shoes.
Eggs can survive YEARS while waiting for perfect conditions to hatch.
Females only have to mate once to have millions of babies over the course of her life.
Fleas can survive YEARS between meals.
It's possible that your cat's have had a few fleas since their "walkabout". It's only now that they've bred enough of them for you to notice.
Best way to get rid of them:
Frontline on the cats.
Vacuum the house every other day for a month, and wash everything that will fit in the machine.
Good luck.

I think fleas can hitch a ride inside with us. Even if not, it only take one trip outside to get them.
To get rid of them Front Line is very effective IF they are old enough. Also be sure to wash their bedding, etc. Blitz the fleas all at once.

I don't like to use those flea drops (i.e. frontline & advantage). My cat would throw up after I used it on her. Foamy throw up -- grose... Now, we shampoo our kitty with Thera NEEM pet shampoo. Never a problem. When I had a dog we did have problems. I used those sticky trays with the night light. Fleas jump at the warm light and get stuck on the sticky tray. Put it in the a completely dark room at night. Look at the tray in the morning. Change it out when it gets full.
When you vacuum, take out your bag or empty your canister EVERY time as they will breed in the bag/canister.
