Hmm, if I were you I’d not like the question the way it’s stated– it presumes that every child DOES indeed need a PARENT. The politically correct question would have been to ask why every child needs a guardian/coach/care-giver, etc – doesn’t have to be a parent.

Anyway – of course a child needs this type of ‘parent’ for very basic physical needs (shelter, food, clothing medical attention, etc). But even before this, as a newborn, a child imitates the parent, learns from facial expression, touch, sound, etc. A limbic connection is formed that functions on a chemical level in the brain that has been proven to be vital for a baby.

Later the ‘parent’ functions as a guide, protector, advisor. The child learns from the parent, even if it is through ‘testing’ her limits, arguing and slowly gaining independence. The child gets a sense of security, protection and belonging that should make a child confident to take on the adult world when she is ready.

As jimrich suggested – ask yourself why you need a parent?

Because everyone wants to be loved, and the best way to learn how to love is through a parent. They guide and protect the child until that child is old enough and mature enough to make the proper decisions to keep it happy.
