I had a look around to see what I could find for you, as I am English and living in the UK I am not familiar with Betsy's story, I hope this helps you.

In June 1776, brave Betsy was a widow struggling to run her own upholstery business. Upholsterers in colonial America not only worked on furniture but did all manner of sewing work, which for some included making flags. According to Betsy, General Washington showed her a rough design of the flag that included a six-pointed star. Betsy, a standout with the scissors, demonstrated how to cut a five-pointed star in a single snip. Impressed, the committee entrusted Betsy with making our first flag.

According to Wikipedia, Elizabeth Giscok, a member of the Society of Friends (or Quakers), eloped with John Ross, the son of an Anglican clergyman in 1773. After John, a member of the Pennsylvania militia, was killed in a gun powder explosion in 1776, Betsy took charge of his upholstery business. Betsy subsequently married Joseph Ashburn and John Claypool. Her story was first told by her grandson, William J. Canby, in 1870. Some historians believe that a Philadelphian man named Francis Hopkinson rather than Betsy Ross designed the first American flag.
