genetic. It has varying degrees of seriousness. My cousin never knew he had it until an x-ray for a sports injury when he was 15! On the other hand it can cause serious disability from birth, a curvature of the spine.

With true spina bifida the spinal cord and its covering layers of tissues and bone do not form properly, leaving a hole or defect somewhere along the spine through which nerves and other tissues may protrude. This faulty development of the spinal cord can result in paralysis of the limbs and other problems involving the bladder and bowels from birth.

I was born 29 years ago with spina bifida and I have partially paralysed legs with no skin sensation down my calves and with no active toe/ankle movements. I also have balancing problems when standing still as well as an uncontrollable bladder. Many people with spina bifida also have hydrocephalus but I don't have that.

Not enough folic acid during pregnancy can be a cause. My mom had a baby before me that had spina bifida. The baby only lived a few hours. I made sure to take my prenatal vitamins and had tests performed with both of my kids.
