I recently adopted a dog from the humane society that was pregnant. I took her into to have her spayed since I mainly do agility/obedience and she is a mutt. Her stomach started to become larger and larger and I suspected pyometra. The vet told me it may put her in danger to abort the pups (my original plan) since she was so far along. This was about a 10 days ago and my vet told me she was about 50 days along. Today is her 60th day (give or take) of gestation. She has been acting very normal until today. She hasn't eaten anything all day and vomited 3 times this morning. I've been regularly taking her temp. and it has been between 99.9 - 99.5 for the past week or so. I just took it and it was 98.9. She has slept in her whelping box almost all day and has started pawing around a bit. The pups are wiggling quite a bit in her belly, which is actually normal. Can anyone help me? I've delivered horses and other livestock before but this is my first time with pups!

I forgot to mention, my dog I believe is a rottweiler/lab mix.. rough guess.. she was about 55lbs when I got her, last week at the vet she was 60. I've been feeding her as much as she can eat to help her put on some weight. Will her malnutrition before effect these pups? Also, is her vomiting an issue? She just sort of threw up some stomach fluid (the yellow stuff) this morning and that was all. When the vet and I looked at the xrays, we counted 8 maybe 9 pups. I've taken care of orphan pups before but they were about 2 weeks. I don't have any milk replacer with me and I know colostrum is important. If she rejects them should I force her to feed them until the morning?

Sounds like it will be tonight
the main thing is if she cant get the pup out get her to a vet you don't say the size of it but a lot of small breeds need c-section and you don't know the breed of the Dad so if he is a big breed this will make it harder on her I wish you the best sounds like you will not be sleeping tonight

Yes it is VIP they get some of the Moms first milk

Sure sounds like puppies will be arriving soon. You should sit up with her tonight so you can help if you need to. Most dogs will do okay on there own but you never know when there will be trouble, specially since you have no idea what she is bred to. Is it a large dog, small or medium sized?

Once the temperature drops to 99.0 or below, and remains that way, she will deliver the puppies in the next 24 hours. Good Luck! Hope all goes smoothly!

yes keep a close eye on her tonite..plan to sleep next to her. Hopefully she will take charge and be a good mama... be ready to assist with the sac... but you have experience with horses...everytime we have a foal I get sooooo nervous...so if you can have horse babies you can handle dog babies... ;-)

where you located... if you are close by maybe we will adopt one of your mutt puppies..

Congratulations!
Well, the dog should know what to do. SHe should be licking the pups and hoping they are breathing. Hopefully, she will not reject them (my dog did). If she does not lick them, get a damp paper towel and run it down their backs until they are breathing. Wrap the in a towel until they are dry and put them at the momma's belly.
