It takes at least a bottle of vodka a day to be an alcoholic. Which costs £8 minimum. So £56 per week.
Income support is around £35 per week. How can the tramps afford it. Not to mention food as well.

fivetoze is so right.
But they dont all drink vodka. Where I work they beg for money in the subway near by and then come in and buy Mansion House sherry. We call them the Mansion House crew and walk away if we see them coming to guard off the stench.

If you are unemployed and can give the dole office a doctor's note stating you are an alcoholic, you get an alcoholic premium on your benefit. Unbelievable but true. It isn't much, maybe £10, but that bumps it up to £45 per week. Then you beg a few quid. £8 or £10 a day should be no problem in central London. Then you go to a night shelter and get fed.

First, not all alcoholics drink vodka...some drink mouthwash or isopropyl (the kind used in hospitals and found in the drug stores) Also, an alcoholic can be someone who drinks a single beer a day IF the drinking interfers with judgement and activities of daily living. There are also some very high functioning alcoholics in this world....look to political leaders, clergy and more. For a very thorough look into the disease of alcoholism, read the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous.

Alcohol, if there is nothing else nutritional about it, contains carbohydrates, which are a source of energy (like sugar), hence why people get "beer guts". If you are drinking heavily, you probably don't need to eat much (although eventually you will become malnourished and susceptible to conditions such as scurvy or death).

I imagine a lot of them beg and also share their giros. A lot seem to buy cheap cider and strong beer. It's easy to be judgemental, but a lot of people have had bad experiences or suffer mental health problems to end up in that situation. My son when he was young could not believe that people had no family or homes when he first saw homeless people sleeping on the cold streets. I wouldn't want to swap places with them in this weather would you?

In the States, it is possible to make around 80,000 a year by panhandling or begging. This is tax free.

Also, gerenally they don't buy high quality alcohal nor does it take a full bottle of spirits to be an alcoholic.

Begging and theft. Drug addicts often steal to pay for their habit and alcoholics have to do the same. They borrow and then cheat their families first and when that runs out crime
