The professor for class Logic 315 says on Friday: "We're going to have a surprise quiz next week, but I'm not telling you what day... if you can figure out what day it will be on, I'll cancel the quiz."

The students get together and decide that the quiz can't be on Friday, as if the quiz doesn't happen by Thursday, it'll be obvious the quiz is on Friday. Similarly, the quiz can't be on Thursday, because we know it won't be on Friday, and if the quiz doesn't happen by Wednesday, it'll be obvious it's on Thursday (because it can't be on Friday). Same thing for Wednesday, Tuesday and Monday. So it can't be on ANY day, so there's no quiz next week!"

They tell the professor, who smiles and says, "Well, nice to see you're thinking about it."

On Tuesday, the professor gives the quiz, totally unexpected!

What's the flaw in the students' thinking?

"...if you can figure out what day it will be on, I'll cancel the quiz."

They didn't figure out what day it would be on, just said that it won't be on any day, therefore he gave the quiz.

or

It can be tuesday because the quiz can be on monday if not tuesday. The quiz can happen before they can say it can't happen the following day before it's obvious.

The flaw in their thinking is that they answered what days they thought that the quiz couldn't be on, not on what day that it could be on.

Oh. and the fact that the class they are taking is Logic 315 so the teacher has to be tricky.

If the quiz doesn't happen on Wednesday, it could happen Friday OR Thursday, so he could spring it on Thursday. Flawing the students system at the stem, thus making it all invalid.

Looks like they worked backwards and should have broken up in five groups and asked. Also Someone shoud have worked a deal with the student helper and they could ave gotten a copy of the test. Take care, but would like t know the answer.

if it was a surprise quiz then he would have had to have cancelled it if they figured out what day it was because then it would have not been a surprise quiz. the point of a surprise quiz is that it is a surprise it can be on any day, surprise!

It wasn't a total surprise, because you knew it was coming, just not the exact day. There is no way of determining what day it was going to be on based on the data.
