"Monochromatic" just means using different shades of the same color, or closely related colors, ranging from their darkest hue to white or almost white (the range can also be more limited, with all the purples of a similar value or tone). In this case all shades of purple/violet, blue violet, maybe even some blues, blended with white toward lilac, lavender, etc.

Try doing a Google image search for "purple painting", "purple on purple", "monochromatic violet", "monochromatic purple", etc.; there are a number of different examples.

I'm not sure what you're looking for or why: a famous artist, specific examples to cite as a class assignment, or examples to use as inspiration or a starting point for your own work. So I'm sorry I can't be more specific.

Joseph Albers painted a large number of works based purely on the study of color. Here is an example of one that uses all purple hues. http://www.gallery-ritchie.com/artist/img/albers/perplejpg.jpg
He painted a version of this painting for just about every color combination possible.

monochromatic. You can not use monochromatic colors because it means "one color".

Those black and white pictures that have those sepia tints to them are monochromatic.

Here are about 353 examples.
