I want to soak some fruit in alcohol to cook with next month, but I don't know which would be better, soaking them in rum or in vodka. I was thinking of combining raisins and cranberries, dark rum first came to mind (Appleton V/X) but then Smirnoff has their vodka twists and the green apple seems quite a tempting idea.

Rum. Vodka is a bit too clinical tasting. Rum will bring out the bouquet of the fruit better.

Use a dark rum like Gosling's. If you don't like the taste of rum then any [plain vodka will do, but don't use one of those flavored Smirnoff ones. They are artificially flavored (they use the same industrial esters that are used to flavor soda, sucking candy, and even lemon pledge). The alcohol will cook out but the esters will stay and when they get cooked, they turn nasty.

The fruit will bring it's own flavor to the party, so you won't need any artificial crap.

I think soaking them in rum adds a better depth of flavor, and I, personally, prefer to drink rum over vodka. But I guess it depends on your taste. Why don't try a test run with both and see how they turn out?

I think rum would be better but.... I would put half in rum and the other half in a flavored vodka. Then after they have soaked try them and see which one your taste buds like best.

Are you trying to avoid alcohol? If not, you can soak the fruit in Amaretto or a fruit brandy or bourbon or whatever you like. If the alcohol is a problem, soak the fruit in juice -- maybe a combination of apple and orange, or use some grape juice. If you do that though, reduce the sugar just a little bit since the juice will add sweetness to the recipe.

I would soak them in rum because it's such a rich drink that the fruit would only enhance the rum.
