Hardwoods: oak, cherry, mahogany, maple, walnut are the most popular woods. These are the really nice ones.
The lesser expensive desks are made of veneers which are cheaper wood or composites covered by a thin strip of a hardwood (That's a simple explanation)

All....it depends on what you want to buy and how much you are willing to spend. All furniture can be made from any of the woods....ash, mahogany, oak, burl, teak, rosewood, etc. Pine is the least expensive material. Solid woods will be the most expensive. A lot of the furniture industry uses solid wood veneers over cheaper woods and the cheapest furniture is made from a processed wood product called MDF.

Dead trees! Usaually Maple, Oak, Hickory and then hard and soft pine. Most Dining room sets and tables are Cherry or Mahogany. The so called Fruit and Nut woods are very hard and used for furniture

depends on haw expensive...most are going to be made of more inexpensive woods like Poplar or Ash. If it is more upscale then it may be made with Walnut or Cherry wood. Even expensive furniture is made with a veneer. It is wood that has been cut to make nice designs (no 8 foot wide trees)

Hardwood trees like Oak are best.
Softwoods like Pine are not good.
A lot of the stuff you buy new at the furniture store is particle board with real of fake wood veneer.
