I'll answer your question with a question why have sat scores declined every year since 1969. There are more atheists today than then so as we have taken God out of schools and out of our lives we seem to be losing our ability to think. So how can you say atheists are intelligent when test scores show otherwise?

As compared to what?
If you base all your understanding on logic and require proof in an earthly sense, then yes, you would seem to take an intelligent approach to life.
That Christians can discern life in a spiritual sense would indicate that their understanding is beyond the capabilities of the intelligent among us, thereby exposing the limits of human intelligence.

The fool has said in his heart 'there is no God!' Psalm 14:1
It's not that they're so intelligent. If you had decided there is no God(which is a philosophical decision and illogical) you'd have to believe that you could learn everything you could to prove there really is no God.
For example IF THERE IS NO GOD, WHAT ARE THE ATHEISTS FUSSING ABOUT.
God isn't the one who needs defending - the atheists have to prove He's not there!!
See Norman Geisler's book 'I Don't have enough Faith to be an Atheist!'

I'm an agnostic and that is not my perception. They are as a rule at about the same intellectual level as fundamentalists. It comes as no surpize that in their efforts to debunk christianity they approach the matter from the same literalist perspective as fundies, and are obviously addressing themselves to fundamentalist christianity which is apparently the only variety they are familiar with.

Many of them claim to have once been Christians, so what happened? When they were Christians they had low IQs but when they became atheists their IQs jumped 40 points?

Because of a lack of religion. A lack of a one-tracked mind. Their eyes are opened and they seek the most logical explanation.
If they're real atheists, that is. Atheists that disbelieve in God out of hatred towards organized religion are often easily excitable and disorganized with their arguments.

Just as you shouldn't generalize one group by saying they're all unintelligent, you shouldn't generalize another group by saying they're all intelligent.
I'm sure there are unintelligent atheists, as well as unintelligent Christians.

i think they put a lot of faith in science.they'd rather that something be proven, than to just believe in it.faith is a different way of approaching life.it basically means,ok.i believe in something.but i cant prove if its real,or not.if i cant see for myself that its real, then i cant believe in it.what if i choose to believe, and i end up getting disappointed?isnt it better to just take things as they are?dont try to believe in something if its not what i already know?
its easy to avoid a life of faith.we dont want to trust anything outside of what we believe.science can seem quite comforting.because they dont tell you to have faith in science.they have the evidence that answers a lot of questions we all have.that evidence being, dont rely on faith.faith cant prove anything.to believe in something, you need a valid reason to do so.science provides that reason.it tells us that something is absolute, something is certain.faith is believing in something you cant see.if we cant see something, how can we believe it exist?its hard to believe in something,if we're not sure it exists,or not.
we all have our different ways of seeing things.but if someone cant share our beliefs,it doesnt make them a bad person.we just have our own approach to life.faith is one way.science is another.and theres other ways.the one thing we can agree on,i think,is that we're human.we're human beings.and we live on planet earth.and we all hurt,we all get angry,we all have questions.and we all have our beliefs.its just sad that we let our differences affect us.to the point where we hurt each other.instead of getting along.

I'm agnostic, and I will propose that the general societal trend is that atheists are willing to question what is around them, rather than take it as a given.
This applies to religion, for instance. This may be due to a higher educational level, causing them to be exposed to other ideas. It could be to economic factors -- such as travelling to other areas and being exposed to other cultures.
I could be completely wrong -- this is entirely conjecture.

You're implying that every atheist is intelligent, which is not an intelligent assumption. I've met some intelligent atheists as well as intelligent Christians. To imply that atheists are more intelligent is just arrogance.
