Both my cat and dog have broken out with small crusty bumps on their back and hind quarters. There is no sign of fleas, no change in food and nothing that I can tell that has changed in their living styles. Any idea what it might be. I am positive that neither has fleas. Can cats and dogs share infections or perhaps its an allergy? A couple of months ago my cat broke out with the same bumps and she got a shot from the vet to cure it but the dog has never had this problem. Also are there any non-vet prescribed remedies that I can administer to relieve the itching?

Fleas can be hard to see sometimes if there aren't too many of them so don't be so sure that it isn't fleas or something else parasitic for that matter - dogs and cats can both get skin mites which are microscopic so you won't be able to see them. There are other skin infections they can share like ringworm (it's a fungus) and allergies are possible but it would be odd to have them to both be allergic to the same thing and present at the same time.
Call your vet to discuss it - they may just prescribe some anti-parasite medication for you to try or they may need you to bring them in for an exam - either way, in the long run it'll be a lot less time, hassle and $$$$ if you get it dealt with professionally instead of going through a bunch of different home remedies when you're not sure what's causing the problem.

You can't try any self-medication until you know what the problem is! There's no point giving any 'anti-itch' stuff unless you remove the cause of the itch.

Did the vet confirm there are no fleas? If not, you can check for them yourself by searching for flea dirts (poos) rather than actual fleas - these look like black specks.

Anyway. You took the cat to a vet, and the vet made it temporarily better - how about you ring the vet and tell them there's still a problem? Otherwise how can they help? It might be allergies, fairly unlikely as both animals are sharing the same symptoms. It's more likely to be fleas or mites. Go back to the vet!
