My almost 17 month old doesn't say much (about 4 words) and they all sound very unclear. In fact they sond they same as if my hearing were muffled. Could his hearing be muffled and that this is how he hears words. What could cause this?

My son hardly talked until recreantly and he's almost 4. And now he's speak more and more each day @ 17 months my son could barely say the basic { mama , dada bye and that's about it}. With my son it wasn't a hearing problem but when I took him for his check ups Would always tell the doctor and she checked him and told me all kids learn differently. Just take him to the doctor and get the test done it's probable nothing but to know for sure, will make you feel better. Good Luck ^_^ DJ

My eldest 2yo twin has hearing problems.
Get his ears tested. What they do is stick a hearing devise which is about the thickness of their thumb into their ears. If the sound waves don't bounce back right they can address the problem. There are a lot of free clinics that do this, but it isn't expensive anyhow. Your not the only parent going through this. My boy is 2 & 2 months and barely says 4 words. :(

Does he have frequent ear infections? I would take him to an ENT--otorhinolaryngologist, Ear, nose & throat dr. He can perform a tympiotogram where he measures the way sound is bouncing off of your son's ear drum. That will determine if the sound is actually reaching your son like it should.

Is he up to date on all the rest of his developmental steps? Is he walking, feeding himself, etc.? I'd be tempted to have him see a developmental psychologist so that they can assess if he's behind on not just speech, but everything, or normal in everything else, just not speech, which means he's one of those kids that don't talk until 4 years old and then is speaking in long complicated sentences.

My son does the same thing. The doctor ordered to have a hearing test and if everything comes out ok she is going to have him take some speech therapy classes.

my boy started speaking when he's turning 3. speech is muffled and not clear. he sounds like he has a hoarse voice and even his teachers couldnt make out what he was saying. however, his hearing is perfectly normal. go see a ENT. they have various audiometry tests and will conduct the most suitable one for ur son.

It could be, but it could also be a speech problem. I would take him to see a child specialist who would know how to test for speech problems.
