There is one form that is genetically linked. This form only account for a small portion of breast cancer cases. Most cases cannot be linked genetically, but there may be a first degree family history. Don't forget, even men can get breast cancer, but thier cases are much rarer.

Breast cancer can be genetic...however there is some crazy statistic out that there about 75% or more of newly diagnosed breast cancer patients have not had any family history. So monthly self breast exams and yearly mammograms are a must.

very, very much so. From the maternal side. You inherit mutations of the BRCA1 and 2 genes, which are supposed to, but do to mutation do not suppress tumor growth, leading to higher risk of breast and ovarian Ca.
There have been women of late who have opted for total mastectomies, without any evidence of cancer, simply because their mother, grandmother, aunts etc have all had and/or died from breast ca.
If you have a strong family history, you need mammograms earlier and more often than the average women. You need to be proactive and discuss the genetic links in your family and be ready to act.

I understand the incidence is low, however I believe it runs in my family. My mom had breast cancer. My younger sister got breast cancer five years before I got it.

Breast cancer is genetic but it doesn't mean that you are prone to getting breast cancer. I found a great website to help prevent breast cancer.
Flaxseed
One addition to your diet that provides natural prevention of breast cancer is flaxseed. Flax adds lignan precursors to your diet, which are then converted in your body into a weak anti-estrogen. Just one to two tablespoons of ground flaxseed in your diet per day is helpful in preventing tumors that respond to estrogen. In addition, flax adds plant omega-3 fats to your diet, which have been shown to provide a number of benefits to the body.
Beans
Beans are another great addition to your diet. It might take awhile for your gastrointestinal tract to get used to increasing your intake of beans, but it is well worth the effort. Throw some beans in your soup, salad, and even pizza to add more fiber to your diet, which may help fight breast cancer by lowering the estrogen levels in your body.
Whole Grain Foods
Other fiber boosters are whole grain foods. Don’t bother with white rice. Instead, add brown rice, wheatberries, and bulgar to your diet. When purchasing breads, bagels, crackers, cereals, pastas, and tortillas, go for the whole grain options.
Nuts
Nuts also add more fiber to your diet. In addition, they provide natural prevention of breast cancer by being loaded with monounsaturated fats, which have been shown to fight cancer.
I found this website to be very informative, check it out!
Hope this helps!
