The 40GB and 80GB PS3's are here to stay and aren't going anywhere.

Sony stopped producing the 60GB PS3 to cut costs because it had the Emotion Engine in it. The 80GB PS3 uses emulation software instead of the Emotion Engine for backward compatibility, but the 60GB PS3 has better backward compatibility though.

And Sony stopped making the 20GB PS3 because it wasn't selling that well, most people were buying the 60GB PS3's and so they stopped making the 20GB PS3's.

For now, Sony will continue making the 40GB PS3. It just came out this month, so I doubt Sony already has plans for discontinuing it.
