Since I am guessing that about 80 percent of the world is religious or belongs to a religious group, you would think that the world would be a much better place since most religions preach non-violence. As a Catholic, I am disgusted when I see people who claim to worship that use Him as an excuse to persecute and kill other people. What are your thoughts on this?

Yes, I agree. I am sadden when people persecute other religions too.

For those who equate lack of morals to atheist, please show me proof. Religion isn't the only idea that teaches morals. Culture constructs morals too. And culture doesn't necessarily have religion.

I understand that Japan is prodominately Atheists. Would you say they lack morals?

well i mean look at the terrorists of 9/11.
they believed their god told them to do all these terrible things.
i do agree that the world should be a much better place with those statistics.
but the bad people outnumber the good people by a lot I'm sure.
i just got done watching the movie Romero in Religion class. (I attend a Catholic school.)
In the movie the military of El Salvador was killing Christians and they even went so far as to shoot the tabernacle.
you should really watch this movie, it is awesome. sad, but really good.

Can you really be that naive? The Catholic church has been killing people all over the world for 15 century's. They really liked to burn people alive, all in the name of the trinity! Haven't you heard of the crusades, or what they did in the Americas. It is only in the last one hundred and fifty years that it has stopped. A large part of the people who are catholic, the religion was forced on them. Look up the office of the Inquisition

Just the idea that religions preach peace doesn't mean that there is peace as a result of all these religions. Opposite, different religious doctrines compete with one another or the resources, thus creating conflict.

Seems like the majority of wars were either completely religion based or had faith a strong component.

happens daily look at the churches they rape kids take money tax free at that and laugh all the way to the bank. look at you're local church at what a pastor preacher or priest drives 50.000 dollar cars and they live in million dollar homes. they molest kids and are above the law so anyone with a tumbs down to this should read the news. they get sent to a diffrent church if the law where they worked is on to them. its all a milking of the public and the goverment. look at religion in a whole more people have lost theyer life for it than any war but is it peace ?????????

I personally feel that with so many different relions and beliefs in this world, how can only ONE be right..? I really wish people would just accept that we all have a different way of seeing things ... and accept that!
: )
Live and let live, right .. ?

I agree. Truth is they twist the commandment "Thou Shall Not Kill" to mean "murder (premeditated for no cause)." They use the wars in the past to justify the wars in the present. I don't care WHAT was written in the bible, I truly believe that the men in the bible justified their killings by throwing the word God around... just like they do today.

Many believers - and that includes any religion- believe that their god is vengeful. That he will go to any extreme to protect what they believe is right. Do you see what's happening? Everyone creates god in their own image. They hate so he must hate anyone and anything that tries to hurt them. Men cause wars not God. He is not the killer of life, He is the creator of life, he caused life, He said to Moses His name was, "Yaveh" which means "I AM." That is so powerful. I AM is to say that you be, you are, you live. God IS.

I just wanted to let you know...Im not atheis and I dont beleive in God. Its almost like I made myself own god to believe in. I dont agree with the christian, catholic, ghandy, buddhist etc.. For some reason I just know God isnt like that and I know theres God but those things dont sound real and Im not trying to offend the culture. I just beleive thats theres god and you will go someplace when you die and Gods helping. Just that you dont know him. Not the answer you want, sorry.

Not practicing what you preach is the main reason I'm an agnostic. I'd rather go to hell than end up in heaven with a pack of hypocrites.
