it's an eternal symbol. You can not find the beginning nor the ending of a circle. Not only that, but it's a public statement that you are taken.

ok this is what i found:

The Egyptians began the custom of the wedding ring. They believed its circular shape was the perfect symbol of unending love. Brides and Grooms wear the ring on the third finger of the left hand because it was believed that a vein (the vena amoris) in that finger ran directly to the heart

I am not positive, but I believe that circular band represents undying love and commitment...the circle has no beginning or end...as the wedded couples love should be...
