I have several avi files and real audio/video files that I would like to burn them into playable dvd files?

Like I said I have several avi files and other video files that I down loaded to my computer I just got an external dvd r+w drive but it came with nero software that has smartstart with it but I am looking for a programe that will convert this files that will playy them in a regular dvd player with out lot of hassel is there a programe that is eather frre or that does not cost a lot of money that can do this please help someone.
