Here's the deal-I am going to be house sitting for a very good friend of the family. I am supposed to check on the house several times a day and stay there every night for 5 nights. I am supposed to come up with a price for them to pay me. I have no idea how much to ask to house sit. Does anyone know the average price or a fair price to ask for?

I wouldn't ask to get paid for this but the family has offered me to pay, and I wont turn down an offer for money considering i'm a broke college student. They asked me to come up with a price. I will be looking after and feeding 2 dogs..and the fish. I don't want to ask for too much considering they are good friends of the family. But, like I said they want to pay me and are set on it. I just have concern with asking for a price and it being too much or too little. The advice I'm looking for is what should I suggest as payment to this family who will not take no payment for an answer.

Well, I pay my cat sitter $25.00 per day to come to my house each morning and evening.
However, this is a friend and you should not ask for payment from friends and family. You can suggest that they remember you with a small gift. My guess is the gift won't be small.....enjoy your house sitting.
best of luck to you!

Friend of the family or not, they do expect to pay you for your services so you should come up with something. It sounds like no pets are involved, just watching over their house but a petsitter can get anywhere from $20 per visit so I would ask for at least $25.00 per day plus a little extra because you are spending gas money to visit several times during the day. Calculate out your time and expenses. It's a job so you should be paid. And they are gracious enough to want to pay you.

Sounds like it will take up the majority of your time , both day and night so ...calculate what you would make if you were working at a regular job and what you would make per hour. Then take into consideration that you will be sleeping there overnight alone. Make sure you have the numbers of the neighbors and friends of the family in case of emergency. Also, are you just checking on things or feeding pets, cleaning anything, watering plants, filling bird feeders? I did this once but I wouldn't do it again. It was not worth what she paid me. I would charge at least $100 per day if your duties include taking care of anything other than just checking on the house and sleeping there.

There really isn't a price to ask for such a job. The family that has asked you to housesit should be the ones that feel what a fair price is. But I personally wouldn't ask for payment. The gesture to house sit and have a nice place to hangout in peace would be payment enough for me.

it depends if it is close by or a long drive away. If you have to take care of pets. If you have to go INSIDE the house several times a day . How big the house is, how rich the people are, what your family thinks you should charge and so on.

To me..if you really like the house.its in a good neighborhood and you'll enjoy it I wouldn't charge anything plus its a really good friend. Is it far from your work? If you do work? Maybe 10.00 a day for gas and hope they leave you food. Remember its a good friend of the family how about you? Good friends are hard to come by..I maybe would say 10.00 a day and perhaps they will tip you..good luck..I love to house sit don't dig around.

I don't know what point this conversation between you and the owners of the house have got to so not sure if it's too late to say this to them. But you could try just saying to them to pay you whatever you they feel is reasonable.

If these are very good friends I wouldn't ask for anything. Or just ask for some pizza money or something. But if they offer money, go ahead and take it.
