On July 8, 1922 the British Foreign Minister drew his new map of the Middle East on the back of a napkin. That map fused the Kingdoms of Mosul, Babylon and Basra into Iraq, from the lands once run by the Ottoman Empire of Turkey. That Empire was a political casualty of the First World War.
In 1932 the British granted independence to that country.
