Why did God have the Israelites run into the promise land which was already in occupation by others there before them and kill all of them? Isn't that the least bit barbaric and go completely against Christ's teachings? Isn't that a bit selfish too?

Wow, all these answers are ridiculously stupid. If you don't question anything your up to complete submission to a corrupt power. Don't question God? If anything that helps your relationship.

I haven't COMPLETELY read the bible but I have read the first half of the Old Testament and most of the New Testament. I didn't learn this from other people alone. I don't trust them. What are the names of these "tribes"?

Christ didn't start his teaching until hundreds of years later. Those who lived in the land believed in false idols. God back then judged in black and white not like now where you have a set time to choose if you want to believe or not. God had given Abraham a promise that he would have many forebears and that they would be given a land where they could live. And they would be safe as long as they kept believing in YHWH as the one true God. Those living in the land believed in idols so they were driven out.
You can read throughout the Old Testament, that nations who went against God lost their lands as they were captured by other people and this continues on, if those who captured a certain land didn't believe in God, then a other nations will rise against them and take the land etc.
However, this won't happen to Israel because God made a covenant with Abraham and he made it again in Jeremiah:
"This is what the Lord says, he who appoints the sun to shine by day, who decrees the moon and stars to shine by night, who stirs up the sea so that the waves roar -- the Lord Almighty is his name: "Only if these decrees vanish from my sight," declares the Lord, "will the descendants of Israel ever cease to be a nation before me." This is what the Lord says: "Only if the heavens above can be measured and the foundations of the earth below be searched out will I reject all the descendants of Israel because of all they have done," declares the Lord." {Jeremiah 31:35-37 NIV}
Edit: You hate other Christians? You're a Christian? Well news to everyone!

The ones who were currently inhabiting the Promised Land were the barbarians. And back before the New Testament, that's how God did things because there was no order in the lands. You either killed, or you were killed. Then God used Moses, whom he put in the Promised Land, to establish The Law and to bring order to the lands so that death wouldn't have to be the answer.
Things have to happen in time. God set man in the boundaries of time, and so God has to work with man in time. So, in the beginning, when God made man, He said "this is Earth. Take care of it." God gave man a chance. Man screwed up and God slapped man on the wrist. Man screwed up SO MANY TIMES that God finally had to say "Okay, I'm gonna give you a law to live by". So the law came to Moses, who brought it to the world of men.
After a while, men couldn't obey the laws anymore, so that's when God sent Christ.
So in answer to your first question, no, killing them was the way things had to be done at that time.
In response to your second question, no, Christ's teachings had no bearing on the past. How could the people that came before Christ obey him?
In response to your third question, selfishness is God's right as the creator of everything. Do I disagree with it? Honestly, yes. But I'm also not in the position where I created everything, so I've come to the realization that I deserve nothing.

The term atheist stems for old greek philosophy, many a person that has no set tenents or laws to their beliefs. Basically, meaning that they are individualistic in the views of their reality, so even a person that would have a god but not practice an actual religion would have been called an ATHEIST. Over the centuries, the defintion has been revised. In Christiandom, atheist is a person that does NOT believe in god (the christian god). Christians don't like individualistic beliefs this is evident throughout the history of christianity. Heretic original meant 'free thinker'. Most christians like to view atheists into one sterotype though. To a Christian, an atheist is a person that defies god (at least the Christian version) and is into evolution. Hheheeee which is hardly the case. Its not like atheism is a set religion nor do all atheists hold to the same definitions to their reality.

Well..........Christ is the new covenant to love one another. And He brought peace to the land to those who recieve it >>> THats why He said on the cross it is finished !!!!!!!
And His sacrifice (the perfect Lamb of God) on the cross did away with the old covenant.........they use to have to sacrifice a lamb without spot or blemish....I cant go into it all for obvious reasons , but the old testament is a type and shadow of the things to come.....the shedding of a lambs blood was the type and shadow of Christ shedding His blood on the cross for all sinners, (if they recieve Jesus as their Lord,) and ask God to forgive them AAAND may I add, the sinner must also forgive others in order to be forgiven...you know forgive us our tresspasses AS we forgive those who tresspass against us
Why the blood thing? Well even biology will tell you that life is in the blood if we have no blood NO LIFE.
THat actually could be considered a type and shadow of the natural world reflecting the supernatural world....get it??
There's power in the Blood of Christ,,,,it heals and restores takes away negative thinking which can lead us into trouble How ? Well that is one of God 's Divine Miracles and you just except it through Faith....and faith pleases God.
God made a covenant with Father Abraham that his decendants would be as many as the stars in the heavens and that they would inherit the promised land.God is always faithful to His word...look up in the dictionary what the word covenant means or try googling it you will understand mor of why God took the Israelites into battle that way I... its about covenant promises.....a covenant is binding
Say you were of the tribe of the Handymakers and were skilled craftsmen but not good at defending yourself
Then you met up with the Warlords who were skilled at fighting but couldnt even chizel out a bow and arrow....well thos 2 tribes would make a covenant to unite and protect one another and it was so binding that if one of their own tribes broke the word of their covenant they would kill their own member.....
not many people hold true to their words now days do they?// We say what we want if it feels good or not then change our minds when we want
think of how many times you have said things without really meaning them??? I do and if I had to be accountable to my words I would be dead and you would still be in the dark!!!!!!!hahahahhahhahaaa
Thank God He sent Jesus..for unconditional Love Suppose God knew what He was doing?????????
That's God's new covenant promise, in Christ , to us>
to forgive
Also I wanted to add that that is still why there is fighting over the promised land in Isreal >it's about>>> the COVENANT

This is not what happened. God was leading them to the Promise land but the Isrealite worshiped the golden lamb. u know? And he punished them by making them wander for 40 years. By the time Isreal got there, it was taken. It was filled with many glories but most of the spies they sent said that it was filled with Giants and all. But they would have been nice and shared I cant remember if the wandering things was before or after. Oh yeah after. And the Isrealites who wanted to stay there did. and the others left and wandered. And God does everything for a reason he is NOT randomly mean or randomly punishs someone. Im glad somebodyt finally posted a pluasable question. good question though.

How can the pot say to the potter put me over here not over there. And by the way don't destroy any of those other pots you made. Further, God is infallable he cant make mistakes. In addition he says " Your ways are not my ways.My ways are higher than yours." meaning we dont think the same way about things as he does. God's purpose for the Isrealites was to have them do things his way so that they would be an example to the rest of the world, to show us how to treat each other how to live holy so that we can be blessed and prosper. " My beloved above all I would that you would prosper." He intended them to be a blessing to the whole world by example. And I gotta say that little country with all those different enemies still surviving, still thriving, still rich in some ways, in the desert where there should be not water or greenry. You just gotta know someone miraculous is on their side.

The people who were their before Moses took the twelve tribes were once Gods elect. They had completely turned their back on God and started worshiping false Gods. When you make a covenant with God you had better keep that covenant. As you see with the twelve tribes of Israel they themselves ended up losing the land the same way they had gained it. There is only one major difference God has promised them that upon his return or shortly before he will return the land to them. You have seen partial fulfillment of that prophesy with the land of Jerusalem once again a country.

These Canaanites were cursed by God and so was the whole line of Noah's son Ham. The fallen angels had a lot to do with mixing with people and the people allowing their idolatrous habits. Both Nimrod and Canaan were great grandsons of Ham who was Noah's cursed son. Both rebelled against God. Genesis 10 shows the lineage.
The wages of sin is death. If you raise a rebellious child and he refuses to obey God and teaches others to disobey God, God will kill him.
Christ's teaching was "what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and lose his soul?" God knew these Canaanites had all lost their soul because of evil. These were not good folks that God said kill all of them. These were idol worshiping sexually immoral greedy rebelling against God people.
The Israelites didn't kill them all like God told them to do and they polluted the Israelites and God sent Israel into captivity and let their enemy have their land. Who is Israel fighting today, but the sons of Canaan and the sons of Esau.
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. Study the Holy Bible, King James Version. God doesn't mess around with sin and disobedience. God would have killed thousands of the Israelites and did when He opened up the earth to swallow them because they messed with Moses, God's annointed. Moses stepped in and asked God not to kill the sinners many times and saved their hides. Jesus said, "If you love me, keep my commandments."
The gospel teaches of the humble, loving and sweet Jesus that went to the Cross for you and me. He is coming back as King of Kings and Lord of Lords and ruling and reigning with a rod of iron. He is very capable of saying, "I never knew you."

Well, to call God selfish showing signs of confusion, he is sovereign and knows the end from the beginning and he knew what would be if the people wouldn't leave. He Got rid of the inhabitants because they wouldn't serve him and would lead the people of God into corruption . And to you Christ's teaching argument, this occurred before the teachings of Christ so that cannot be applied.
