Hawaii is a VERY expensive place to live. There are plenty of jobs available, but most of them are low-paying.

we lived there for about 9 months and loved it.

alas, incomes are weak and costs are high. Housing is particularly pricey and nearly everything you buy comes from LA by boat. [Hondas do, too.]

Water sports (ocean) are awesome in Hawaii. Unlike California, the water is warm most of the year and wet suits are worn only in the winter months or if you're going to be in the water for hours.

We especially liked the multiple ethnic society -- everyone is a minority and the various groups seem to take turns complaining that they are being oppressed by some other groups. Lots of new and different foods. :-)

if you're in the over 65k income class, things should work out ok for you. People with lower incomes will find the money is tight.

If you have family and other ties to the mainland, you'll find that you're off in nowhere land -- it is 2 to 3 hours time difference just to California and 5 or 6 to the east coast. That's far away; the business day overlaps with NY only a few hours despite that many Hawaiian businesses start at 7am.

Folk we knew who'd moved there from the mainland spoke of getting cabin fever -- you're stuck there. There is nowhere on any of the islands that is more than an hour or so away by car. Going to another island means by boat or plane and you'll have no car when you get there. Lots of car rentals available and lots of tourists to rent them.

It's very expensive.

I work for a retailer that has 4 stores in Hawaii. Every time we transfer someone from the mainland there, after about a year they are begging to come back.
