No it is not necessarily weird. It dates back to when such behavior was frowned upon and the women involved would be labeled ''promiscuous''. The gentleman involved, in turn would contain himself until the proper private moment arose. In short his actions speak volumes. He has been taught to respect and cherish the women he admires. He is also willing to postpone his signs of affection to insulate her from anything that may be misconstrued as negative. He feels so strongly of these values he is apprehensive about holding hands.
You have a rare catch (if I am correct in my assumptions). Tell him that you appreciate him for all that I have described. Then tell him that you desire him to just ''hold hands''. Tell him that this will in no way compromise your virtue and that even if it were to, you would make the sacrifice. You have a good man there (I suspect) and I hope I have helped you:)

Why don't you ask him about it. If he just shrugs it off then you try holding his hand and watch his reaction. Usually his eyes and face can tell alot about what he is feeling, whether it is scared, embarrassed or just uncomfortable. Maybe he was brought up in a family who don't touch in public.

No- my husband thinks I'm weird because I'm the same way as your boyfriend. Some people are just uncomfortable with public displays of affection.

How approximately asking him why it particularly is happening? If he refuses to respond to, then maximum probable he's hiding something it particularly is plenty worse than something as trivial as shyness. i could question the validity of his sincerity right this moment if I have been you. If he tells you particularly what's misguided, then manage it from that factor, despite the problem may well be.

what ah_jeez said. I think it's more common in guys. It's a guy thing. PDAs aren't so much discouraged as showing feelings in general. Sad, but true. We mostly grow out of it by our late 20s.

if you know he is comfortable around your family and friends, then he should be the same way out in public. he is probably just not wanting people that dont know you or him know that your together, he is probably cheating on you. if he loves you like you "THINK," he does, then he should show it anywhere. now im not saying hang on you or be pushy or whatever, but he should show it to you. ask him WHY!!

No, you like touching in public and he doesn't. Just accept his differences.
