Haha, resistance is futile!
I think the best way to describe assimilation in terms of the Latinos in the US is not positively but rather negatively. What do I mean by this? It's not necessarily about what people need to do to assimilate but rather what they need not do.
The main thing I think they need not to do is have a counterculture. This includes for one thing not adopting the English language. It doesn't mean they shouldn't speak Spanish but just that they should be able to speak English.
Besides culture another aspect of assimilation is identity.
Who or what do Latinos identify their selves as? Immigrants in the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century saw themselves as Americans with Italian, German, etc backgrounds. But there are so many Latinos in certain parts of the country, mostly in the southwest in states like Arizona and California, that Latinos do not need to assimilate. They have the option to only speak Spanish and continue to identify their selves as Mexican, El Salvadorian, Chilean, etc instead of American.
These are not my normative opinions but rather my observations.

Ok i looked at the link and checked it out for a few seconds...nobody is asking you to assimilate...but acculturation is probably a better term tha can describe the process of a person entering another culture...i am an immigrant myself and i went thru the process. i would never give up my "roots" and my traditions and my culture...however, I am not going to resists the American culture either. Acculturation happens when an immigrant finally finds that place of balance between their home cultural identity and the cultural identity of the host country. It can be a paiful process and can be difficult. Acculturation is proven to be more difficult for immigrants of colr, simply because they also have to deal with racism in addition to being from another country.
I am from eatern europe, so the process was a bit easier for me.
There are ways that you can remain "loyal" to your home country without insulting or negating the ways of the country you've moved to.

Assimilation is joining with Americans by putting other flags and national symbols aside and flying the American Flag. Americans love their freedom to worship and prosper under the the law. We owe all of that to our forefathers who gave everything to build this country. No ! They didn't do it all right But thats why we welcome immigrants who come by lawful means. To offer new prospectives and new ideas to make this country great. Assimilating is giving up the old ways and adopting America's ideal of freedom end prosperity for all. You may like the Mexican flag (its nice) but It doesn't represent freedom and democracy. If you are an immigrant and you came to America you came here for a reason. The Mexican flag Should be left inside to honor those Americans who gave their lives for our Flag and what it stands for.

Home loans for illegal aliens
Issues
Illegal aliens are connecting with mortgage brokers and lenders to obtain homes and home loans. Even though it is illegal to trespass our borders, overstay visas, and encourage and harbor illegal aliens, the federal government is actually assisting in the violation of USC 8 1324.
Citizen homebuyers can't obtain mortgages without proof of identity, legal residence and a Social Security number. Yet illegal aliens are allowed to supply a taxpayer identification number which the IRS freely provides to anyone who asks - without doing a criminal background check. Indeed, many banks accept a TIN as the primary form of identification from illegal alien customers.

I don't know about your link, but I will answer your question in a different way. If a person wants to legally immigrate to the United States assimilation is necessary if they don't want to assimilate they should stay at home.

Pedro, Julio or whatever your name is. You can't use Star Trek references to defend your dirt bag countrymen who think this country is theirs for the taking.
Assimilate or cut my grass, cook my food, clean my bathroom, and pick up my garbage for the rest of your life.
