First, you will want to be consistent in how you prepare your steaks. Many recipes for grilling steaks recommend grilling them over a direct-medium fire (350°F to 375°F) on a covered grill.
You also might want to try the cookout calculator at charcoalbob.com. You enter the detail about your grill (gas or charcoal) and the cut, thickness and doneness you want for each steak. It will give you instructions for when to put on and turn each steak so that they come off the grill at the same time, grilled the way you and your boyfriend want them.
The cookout calculator will also give the recommended internal temperature for the doneness you're trying to achieve. You may also want to invest in a good, quick read meat thermometer, but keep in mind that the meat will continue to cook about 5 degrees after you take it off the grill.
Also, many grilling experts recommend allowing the steaks to stand at room temperature for 20-30 minutes before grilling, and allow them to rest for 5 minutes after grilling to keep them nice and juicy (and to finish cooking).
Hope this helps.

Raw MIGHT make you sick, but it might not. The chances of getting sick off of a piece of meat cooked to 105-115 degrees(rare, bloody and really good) are extremely slim. Eat it however you're comfortable though. I eat mine as follows and I cook about 20-25 steaks a day at work, never seen anyone get sick in my 15 years as a chef.
Strip steak-Medium rare
Ribeye-Medium Rare
Filet-Rare

With a solid piece of meat all you have to worry about is the outside of the steak that is were any phatogens would be. As long as the outside of the steak is seared well you can eat it almost raw. Also know as cooked black and blue. So give the outside a nice sear and enjoy.

steaks are ok to eat med.rare as all harmful bacteria is on the surface and not on the inside of the meat. That is why ground beef has to cooked well done, because the surface meat has been ground up into all the meat and mixed up.Any harmful bacteria will be destroyed with heat.
