The last time it happened was during World War Two. The soldier was Private Ed Slovik from Michigan who broke in the face of the enemy and was convicted of that through a general court-martial. This happened in the European Theater of Operations and his death sentence was upheld by General Eisenhower. Slovik was put to death by firing squad.
So, yes, you can be shot for deserting in battle.

They usually arrest you, but when you stand up and walk away in battle, you have a good chance of being shot by anyone!

In the army, the term is Desertion. In time of war, the highest penalty for desertion is the Death Penalty. This almost never happens, though. Now adays death is reserved for far more heinous crimes.

Yes, years ago this was used to keep troops from deserting their units.

The military can shot you in the back as you run or walk away, but it is not done and hasn't been done for over 50 years that I have heard off.

Most cases would go to trail and get a dishonorable discharge, that would come with time in prison also.

The death penalty can be assessed for desertion or cowardice. It's happened a lot more than twice in US hisotry, but it hasn't happened since WWII. PVT Eddie Slovik was executed for desertion on 31 January 1945. His was the only of 49 death sentences for desertion in that conflict that was actually carried out.

Yes, some people feign shell shock, or some such ailment and pretend they are unfit to die. My Grandfather had one of these in the Great War he said OK lad you afraid, you are happy to let your mates die while you stay in the nice trench OK so we will go and you stay, and with that as he blew the whistle and climbed out of the trench to go nearly 6 feet before he was shot in the knee, he pulled the pin on a grenade and let it drop into the trench, kinder than branding someone a coward, not fair to the family to have a brother or uncle branded a coward.

give me a break, dont listen to these people that say yes cause its a load of garbage. In present times you wont be shot for running away thats rediculous and absurd. any soldier knows that your much safer with your platoon then running away thats just common sense. and no they will not shoot you if you run away, you will get in a heap of trouble but not shot. i cant believe some of the idiocy i have seen posted for this question hahaha.

yes and no.

being a deserter is punishable by death.. but you dont just get to take it upon yourself to shoot someone. you need a court martial... and then in this day in age... no one is going to get death over that..
