They don't fire people as such. They deny reenlistment, they muster out early, they reduce recruiting and they will offer incentives to those who are willing to leave earlier than they would normally. People frequently return from overseas assignments with from one to six months left on their contract. These folks are normally discharged early. Their option would be to extend their enlistment until they would be committed to a year or two in order to receive another assignment.

If you are talking about the news story today about shutting down bases they were referring to the layoff of DOD civilian workers and contractors...That type of layoff is a very real possibility.

Yes. The Navy and Air Force are looking at that possibility now.

Yes, the military went through a "force shaping" a few years ago. They offered people to get out of contract early. Not all people, certain MOS's and AFAC's.

yeap.. they do this two ways: by offering early retirement to people and by not allowing people to re enlist.
