There is a perfectly good, over the counter medication called Zovirax. It should be applied as soon after the onset of symptoms as possible 5 times a day.

A good perfume or aftershave dabbed on two or three times a day will help it. it dries the cold sore out quicker and also helps stop the itch you get with them.
Zovirax is the best if you get it at the tingly stage though

I have used Blistex before and mine went in 2 days. Thorughly exfoliate your face paying particular attention to the cold sore (but not harsh) and then use the blistex. But whatever you do DO NOT put make up on it to cover it as it will keep getting infected and will not go. Good luck :)

Zovirax works well - but there are now special invisible (ish) plasters by Compeed:

should be able to get them in most high street chemists.

Avoid touching it, and if you must, make sure your hands are clean!
