We caught a small looking creature that ran inside. It isn't a mouse but looks close, HELP!?

We had a mouse looking creature run in from our front yard. We suspect it was living in the pumpkins or was eating them. It is gray. It is active all hours not just at night. It didn't take to peanut butter like a mouse. It has beady eyes, and hard to see ears. It is about 4 inches long. Tail is short and furry. Nose is pointy. Feet are similar to a mouse but not a mouses nor a moles feet. Tell me what this is and where the best place to let it go would be? Thanks!

We're in Upstate NY

Is it a shrew? Google shrew and see if that's what it looks like.

it could be a vole or another small creature of a similar likeness. Take it to a nearby field and let it be free...

It could be a mole. I'd let it go anywhere, just not close to your house or it will find it's way back in.
