Hello!
I'm wondering if any of you could list some instruments for me.
I'm looking for names of instruments that are:
- Not too shrill
- Wooden
- Preferably lesser known instruments (like the panflutes or dulcimer for example)
(optional) - Good places to buy custom made instruments that fit what is listed above
Thank you!

Oh, I forgot to mention-- when linking instruments for sale sites, please be sure they are not the kind that are made in pakistan-- as I have read those are low quality ones.

Any of the ethnic flutes would meet your standards. I'd start with Native American Flute but also consider the Japanese Shakuhachi as well. Then expand looking into the flutes of both Asia and South America.
Flutes of Europe are likely to not meet your "not too shrill" and your "wooden".
My favorite Native American Flutes are made by Odell Borg http://www.highspirits.com/ but there are also many other great makers out there. I just trust his work because I've never played one of his flutes that I wasn't very thrilled with.

What do you mean by "wooden"? Like a woodwind? Well, I play French horn and it is pretty much the best instrument out there! It isn't that popular and has a beautiful mello sound that is not high, but isn't really low either. If you want to play an instrument that will challenge you but fun to play, French horn is it! It isn't "wooden", it's brass, but it is still AWESOME! Good luck and happy playing!

i'm a composer - and a pianist. I agree - i do no longer innovations seeing extensive quantities of apartments. even nevertheless, I wrote a chew in B important, and my composition instructor "strongly counseled" that I drop the biggest down a pitch to Bb. something of the piece exchange into in F# and Eb, which, whilst dropped down, gave me F and D. the clarification - extra handy sightreading. Strings want sharps for a reason. Take the C#/Db above center C. If a violinist sees a D word, he/she will have the capacity to be tempted to apply the 2nd string, that's D. even nevertheless, the participant might understand (according to threat too late) that the pitch is FLATTED, which capacity the pitch mandatory is under the open string, which, of direction, is impossible to play. So the participant will ought to readjust and flow right down to the G string. even nevertheless, if the pitch is written as C#, the participant will see the C pitch and right now understand to bypass to the G string, in view that no C pitches (different than C double sharp) are playable on the D string. For woodwinds, apartments are extra handy to study, extraordinarily for the clarinet. in view that, on the Bb clarinet, the biggest of Bb sounds like and hands like a C scale, it makes flat keys quite difficulty-free to play. maximum situations, composers attempt to stay interior of three sharps to 3 apartments - A - Eb or C# minor - C minor.
