I have had a sore stiff neck now for 3 months, I have tried heat and it relieves soreness for a few minutes or so than it goes back to the way it was. I usually sleep on my back with my neck supported through the night, when I sleep on my side or my back (which has always been my preferred way to sleep) I wake up in a lot of pain and a lot of stiffness in my neck and shoulders. so I sleep on my back so that I wake up and I have at least 3 hours of feeling good. But than my neck and shoulders are sore all over again. somedays there is more pain and soreness than other days, the pain goes from my head (near my ear, mostly on my right side) all the way down to my left shoulder blade than toward my right mid-upper arm. I have tried aleve, naphroxen and even advil and tylenol nothing seems to work. does anyone have any suggestions?

Sometimes the kind of pillow we sleep with can be a problem. I recently had to change pillows and the one I'm sleeping with now is much better for me than the one I had before. I would also recommend checking with your doctor to see what they say.

First, you should find out what really is wrong with your neck by consulting with your doctor who, I'm sure would run some diagnostic procedures such as MRI's or CT scan and x-rays. I was on disability because of a bulging disc on my neck. I was always in pain and the most terrifying time for me every day was when I had to go to sleep at night. It was just like hell. I tried every way like, using high pillow, low pillow or no pillow at all and nothing worked. I was undergoing physical therapy and every time I came to the clinic, my first complaint to my physical therapist was that I barely had sleep the previous night. He recommended that I try to use Tempur-pedic pillow which he said I could find at Brookstone Stores. I wasted no time, I went on that same day and I was asked by the salesgirl to try it out first. Brookstone has model beds and pillows where customers could lay down and try the pillows and mattresses. Right away, I felt instant comfort and relief. I bought not only the pillow but also the mattress and I never regret it. Now, I even take my pillow with me on my travel. It is an indispensable item in my every night sleep.

I dread going to sleep at night because of this. I need to be knocked out to sleep at all. No OTC's have worked for me.

See a doctor, it sounds like the pain in your shoulder and arm may be radiating from your neck. Three months is a long time to be suffering with this, you need your sleep and you deserve to be treated for pain!

You have some serious muscle spams happening!

I would definitely recommend Chiropractic care and therapeutic massage.
