Guys like to be asked out with the option of saying no and not hurting your feelings. For example, ask him if he'd like to go with you to see a movie. If he says he can't make it and doesn't offer to take you at another time, then he just wants to be friends..

Either do it in person or on the phone. A note or a friend is too impersonal. Be direct.
Tell him you need to talk to him. Tell him that this topic or what you are about to say is not easy for you to discuss with him. This should disarm your shyness and prepare him to hear something very sensitive.
Then ask him: I would love to have you go out on a date with me? How can a guy turn you down.
You will have a discussion. And deal with whatever comes up.
