Depending on where in the District you choose to live, for grocery stores you also have Whole Foods, Yes! Organic Markets and several food co-ops. Also specialty shops like Dean and Deluca, Trader Joe's and family-chains like Magruder's, etc. Plus, there's Eastern Market and other farmers' markets around the area (most year-round).

Italian grocery? Try A. Litteri and Son in the City Market (517 Morse Street NE -- near Gallaudet University and the New York-Florida Avenue Metro Station; Red Line).

Cuisine and pizza-wise, I think other posters have it covered, but would add 2 Amy's (pizza), Mar del Plata (Spanish) and the high-end vegitarian restaurant Vegetate. In Maryland, Mandalay (Burmese; Silver Spring) and Udupi Palace / Tiffin (Indian) in Takoma Park. All personal favorites.

And, on a cautionary note: D.C. has 10% sales tax on prepared food which can make suburban dining more inviting.

Chicago has deep-dish pizza; Philadelphia has the cheesesteak; but there aren't DC-specific foods. You will find a huge range of ethnic cuisine, a lot of "fusion" restaurants and tapas places, and some basic "American" places. If you like Mexican, try Oyamel, Alero, Jaleo, and Rosa Mexicano. My favorite places for pizza are Matchbox, Faccia Luna, and Pizzeria Paradiso. (All of these restaurants have websites, so you can look them up). I also love Sequoia (seafood), Zaytinya (tapas), Ri Ra (Irish/pub fare), Mai Thai (Thai/Asian).

The most common grocery stores up here are Whole Foods (organic), Harris Teeter, and Giant. There are a few Bloom stores in the suburbs.

Good luck with your move!

My favorite resource - Washingtonian Magazine: http://www.washingtonian.com/sections/restaurants/index.html

They have a list of the 100 best restaurants in the area with the cuisine they serve and details of each. Also there are listings for the best bargain dining (Cheap Eats and Dirt Cheap Eats)

I think you'll find that DC is like LA or NYC in that we have everything here... all types of food, large variety, and everything from dinky dives with awesome soul food or bbq or dim sum to some of the best fine dining in the country.

Grocery stores will vary depending on exactly where you are, but there should be Safeway, Giant is a fairly local chain but owned by the same folks who own Stop and Shop or something now... and Food Lion (Southern chain - also Bottom Dollar and Bloom) as well as Shoppers Food Warehouse. They're starting to bring in Harris Teeter and Wegmans as well.

Good luck in your move...

I like Ethiopian food. There are several Ethiopian restaurants in Adams Morgan and in the U Street corridor. DC has the highest population of Ethiopian people outside of Africa. You can get pretty good Middle Eastern food here. There are a lot of ethnic restaurants here--Indian, Asian, pan-Asian, Burmese, etc. We also have a good selection of vegetarian and veg-friendly places here.

As for grocery stores, we primarily have Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, Harris Teeter, Safeway, and Giant. There are also several co-ops and a handful of indy natural foods stores.

Welcome to the area!

Also go to the H St NW corridor for all the new Bars that have great food. Read the City Paper too

Are you kidding? DC has tons of great food places! I would suggest El Tamarindo on Florida Avenue,NW for El Salvadoran, I like Tono Sushi for Japanese. It's on Connecticut Avenue, NW. You can walk the streets of Dupont Circle and Adam's Morgan for lots of good eating. Ethiopian is very popular at 9th and U Streets, NW. You will love DC. It is a great city!

DC has a decent restaurant scene but it does get pricey.....you should just pick up some newspapers and explore. There's a lot of trendy fusion places that you may like...and also a lot of ethnic foods.

I was there a few years ago....it was incredible for ethnic foods of all kinds. I had Japanese, Moroccan, Pakistani, Ethiopian, and French just to name a few. Bring plenty of money...anything really good will be expensive. The options are endless.
