Coffee has caffeine, which is a stimulant. However, caffeine is kind of slow-acting, and it doesn't take its full effect until about 4 hours after drinking. People who drink coffee regularly, though, might be aware of its effects and get a psychosomatic pick-me-up because they know they are drinking it.
