I went to my doctor about a month ago and he gave me a referral to a psychiatrist, I told him about my OCD and how I am depressed off and on...at the time it was'nt bad, but after that and now its getting worse and worse. I don't know what to do...I phoned the doctors office and the lady confirmed the psychiatrist office received the referral and would give me a call when they can take me as they a busy. She said she can't give me a name, address, phone number or anything.

So should I go back to the doctor, or just wait?

I'm scared to go on medication because I don't want to be a fake happy, I want to find out what's bothering me and truly make myself happy. I don't want to be happy but with all the same things in my life that once made me depressed...get what I mean?

Honestly, I wouldn't ever take medication for it either. I'm in the same boat as you, except add panic disorder onto the depression. You trying to get with a psychiatrist is a good decision. I would go back to your doctor and tell he/she that this isn't a matter that can wait. You need help, and you need it now. If they don't help I would go on yahoo or google and type in cognitive behavioral therapy. That is what you need to get you through this without medications. I am currently seeing a psychiatrist for this and it is helping me understand things better. I would also go to the library or local bookstore and buy some books on depression. If you know what causes your depression, it will help you get over it, or at least its helping me.

I consider myself a writer (at least, I write) and I'm not depressed. But frustration and even sadness is something that comes from writing, because, as someone else said before me, you're not just feeling your own ups and downs, but your characters as well. I'm a very emotional person, I will admit, and I get worked up over stuff that maybe I shouldn't. Does how writing is going for me effect my mood? I think so. Writing is, for people who are passionate about it, a form of release of their innermost self, and when all of a sudden something happens and that release gets up on hold, it gets all bottled up. I guess that's why I call Writer's Block a disease. You're being slowly tormented to death by the ideas that you can't write. Haha, so yeah. Are all writers emotional people? I think so. Are they all depressed? I'm going to have to disagree with that one, although they certainly all can be depressed at different times.

Go back to the doctor who gave you the referral and tell him that the psychiatrist is too busy to see you now. Ask for another referral. Keep trying until you get results. Don't worry about the possibility of having to take medication. The medication is used only to treat symptoms.

I agree with you about the fake happy thing. For the past couple of years I have not been happy whatsoever.
If i would have went to a doctor they would say i was depressed.
But i wanted to conquer it myself.
I beleived that i could do it.
I think that you should not go back, don't take the meds, just try to get to the root of it yourself.
That is what really helped me.
Don't talk to a psychiatrist.
Just talk to friends and family.
They are the best help.
I still often feel sad, but now i have figured out why i was sad, why all these things are happening and now i know what i need to do to feel better.
I think that it will take time.
Is there anything that makes you happy?
Do those things.
Talk to people, make friends who will care about you and be there for you.
Try focusing your energy on helping others and making others feel better.
Take the attention off of yourself.
Stop thinking so much and just be happy.
When you start to say something negative to yourself, say 5 positive things instead.

Oh my gosh I have depression so bad and medicine does not give you a fake happy. All it does is take away the negative thoughts. It's almost like it gives you new light and new reason to be here. It's awesome! You don't get high or anything and after a while you just feel normal and you forget all about depression. I would wait a while and go to the phychiatrist.

Depression is not a coping problem it is a chemical imbalance. Go to the doctor and get some anti-depressants. Any medical doctor can prescribe them it does not have to be a psychiatrist. Follow up with the psychiatrist.

don't be afraid to try a medication. trust your psychiatrist... he/she WILL warn you of any side effects beforehand. If tons of people had really bad reactions to a certain medication, the psych wouldn't prescribe it at all.

anti-depressants will only release seratonin, the hormone that makes you feel less sad. so you won't be like "fake" happy.

You need to get on an anti-depressant ASAP. Some of them take up to 6 weeks to work) Then go to see a counselor

Go see your regular doc and get the depression treated. You do not have to suffer with it while you wait for the psych doc to see you for your OCD. Your regular doc can handle depression and it's treatment. Also when you see your doc ask you doc to call the psych clinic to see if they can't get you in sooner. Sometimes if a doc calls they can get you in quicker.

Yes you need to see your Dr. again and tell him you are feeling very bad and still have not heard from the psych. Ask him if he can refer you to another Dr. that can see you sooner.
Good luck.
