OK. So. I'm going to a concert there in december with a friend.
My mom doesnt want us riding the train and subway alone since its at night.
so shes coming to the city, but not going to the concert.
she wants to know if there's anywhere nearby she can go with a friend to pass the time.
anyone have any suggestions?

Irving Plaza is right by Union Square - there are a bunch of restaurants, bars, coffee shops, stores, etc. Also, there is a movie theatre nearby.
Depending when the concert is, between Thanksgiving and Christmas, there is also an open-air holiday market in Union Square, open until about 8pm, where she could get some holiday shopping done.
