Yes, Virgil was sent by Beatrice,
but the question in refering to the text. Why did Dante, when writing the Comedy, decied to have Virgil to be the one to guide him through the ends of the world? (hell, pulgatory, etc..)

Virgil was what was considered to be a "Virtuous Pagan" in the mindset of the time. He was also one of the best known of the Roman poet-philosophers. His "Aeneid" is still considered a "must-read" in many Classical Literature classes......

Virgil was one of the greatest Roman poets and wrote the Aeneid. Dante was choosing a great poet and a Roman. He was comparing himself to Virgil, thus demonstrating his main sin of Pride.
