Im off to LA next week. I have been wanting to hire a car from E-Z car rental whilst im over. This is the only company that will hire a car to myself, a 19 year old. I called the company and spoke to a guy who couldn't really understand me. He was saying I need proof of insurance to hire a car and scince im from the UK, they won't cover me for insurance?

What is the norm for this situation?
How can I get temp cover on insurance to hire a car?

I'm pretty sure I understand your question.

FYI... At first glance, Car For Hire, means you want "hire" a car with a driver to drive you around. If you do need this, however, I recommend Carey transportation because they are comptetitive and global. But I don't think that's what you want.

I've spent some time in the UK (love it by the way) and I believe you want to RENT a car for yourself while you're in LA.

The challenge you're running into is that 99% of all rental car companies in the US have non-restrictions for those 25 and above. They have restricted rentals for those 21 - 24 in most states. Keep in mind that the states of New York and Michigan DO require rental companies to rent to those with a minimum age of 18 (although rental companies charge a $110 US per day surcharge).

I see why this is challenge for a 19 year old from the UK (we're rather daft in our policies in the states, eh?).

I did some digging and found a website for you to check:
http://www.bnm.com/uage2.htm#la

It provides a list of all rental companies at LAX (Los Angeles Airport) and the minimum age requirements.
You'll find there are two companies you would qualify to rent from:
Airana Rental Car: Phone Number: US +13103387282
Their rates look good and they specifically say "Under age 25 welcome" (Woo Hoo!): http://ameriparsrentacar.com/rates.nxg

The second is @West Rent A Car: Phone Number US +13104179050
Their policy indicates they will only rent to those between 18 and 21 with specific proof of insurance provided to them BEFORE you rent.
http://www.bnm.com/atwestla.htm#age
So, to rent from them, you'd likely have to fax a copy of your insurance information to them.
They don't seem that friendly or supportive frankly and I'd suggest you start with Ariana first.

Keep in mind... you don't want to "Hire" a car... you want to "rent" a car.

Good luck and I hope you love CA.

if you need any additional help, feel free to email me at techbankguy@yahoo.com. I travel a lot globally and more in the US.

Cheers.

ALL car rental businesses MUST provide Insurance. Period. Ask to speak to someone else. Of course, you will have to pay for it.
