So everyone knows mental health is a big issue, right? I mean, even if it's deep, deep down inside of you, you still know there are millions of people out there suffering from mental problems. But what about the people who don't care? What's stopping them from taking an interest or showing some empathy? How the hell can they be blissfully happy every goddam day of their lives when they still know people are hurting? It just makes me so mad, that people out there are suffering from real pain every day of their lives and there are still tons of people who don't give a damn. What the hell is wrong with this world? Why can't people see how much anger and hurt there is? Every single person will be affected by some sort of mental issue (even if it's a friend or family) so what the hell's stopping them from caring? It's messed up.

➔ Mental Health
To LeAndra and a lot of others who replyed: I'm not just on about mental health, though that is the big issue I was focusing on. I think it's disgusting how so many people actually don't care at all about ANY things like aids, orphans, and everything else that is wrong with this world. I wasn't trying to 'tar' everyone either - merely point out the huge amount that don't care.
As for the last time I personally thought about anything other than mental health (LeAndra), hopefully this is clearing up your question nicely. I am appalled at the world, to be frank. Most, not all, but most people are too busy with their own problems to even think about helping out others. I hope I'm making myself clear though that I'm not saying it applies to everyone.

And why does Jessica think that the person who posted this question is talking about herself? Whether she's talking about herself or someone she cares about, the fact is that depression is a real illness, not just self-absorbed moping. But maybe that response is an answer in a way the poster didn't intend--people don't care when others are hurting for no apparent reason, because they don't understand. In any case, maybe all we can do is make ourselves alert to the pain of others and learn to care, hoping that the idea will catch on.

Everyone, no matter who it is suffers from some burdens and troubles as a part of their life. What I have to do is look around and be grateful , because my life and life situations could be so much worse. I have worked in a field where helping others is a primary objective and that can be a slippery slope. I figure now that I will listen and give help when asked or someone needs to share, and I will be selective about whom I ask for help. The butcher probably doesn't need to hear about my depression and suicidal ideations etc. The biggest saver for me is 1 Day at a Time.

Because people are naturally selfish and you know what everyone has their own problems day to day. When was the last time you cared about anything other than mental health?? What about all of the people that have aids that are going to die today? What about all of the people that can't have children? What about all of the people that never had a mother or father? Mental health isn't the only issue in the world and maybe you need to recognize that as well. "Seek to understand, not to be understood." Try it out sometime.
And Ralph, no one MADE this country the way it is, it's EVERYONE. Everyone makes this country the way it is. By blaming one person for the wrong-doings of all of america is COMPLETELY retarded to say, if you spill over a glass of milk on accident you can't blame it on anyone else! Our problems are our problems and they aren't caused by anyone else but ourselves.

There is only so far you can care about others until it becomes detramental to your own mental health. I care, but can only care so much. Try and be happy that there are ignorant people out there that will never know what it is like to suffer from depression. Also a lot of people have too many issues and problems of their own to think about before they can even start to understand somebody elses, in these cases they come across as cold.

Greed and lust, the opiate of the masses:
The creators and rulers of our man-made world structure as we know it (or whatever you want to call it) know that most humans fit the 'herd mentality' type.
As long as they are distracted by desire, they are distracted from the subtle, real, natural things in existence, such as pain (of others).
I’m not saying that ancient humans were not barbaric. I’m saying – the ancients were much more in touch with the soul of their humanity, while we moderns are distancing ourselves from our natural ‘souls’ and gravitating toward the cold, the unnatural and the mechanical - and towards glorifying foolishness etc.
My last sentence also sheds light on the modern pursuit of ignorance - including the ignorance of the sciences - especially psychology.
The teens:
As it is, teens have been shown (through scientific studies) to lack empathy naturally. I have nothing against the average, inexperienced, naive teen.
The bullies
However, the bad apples on the Internet seem to possess a malevolent quality about them (which doesn't seem accidental).

You do have a fair poin but we are programmed to worry about ourselves and our loved ones first, it's human nature.
You cant let every sad thing that happens in the world drag you down otherwise you would never be happy and what would be the point of life then? You cant expect everyone to understand or empathise with something that doesn't directly effect their lives.
It is actually pretty naive to think that anybody is blissfully happy every day of their lives, everyone has crap times but people are entitled to be happy in their lives when things are going well.

Not so deep within you is intense anger at the world for the lack of attention that you perceive that they have for you and all others that are hurting. Would you have everyone walk around sad or angry at what you are angry at? I sense your deep anger and pain. Yes, everyone is effected by some sort of mental illness, this is true. People tend to push it away because of the stigma that is attached to mental illnesses.
I believe that you probably need to deal with your issues first and then tackle the lack of empathy that you see in others. "Learning to love yourself is the greatest love of all..."

I totally agree with you on what you just wrote. It seems that there are a lot of people who aren't concerned about anyone else or anything that isn't right in front of them that they have to face. I think that our society and culture influences a very cutthroat way of living. Just live for yourself and indulge your every pleasure etc. This world would be a much better place if everyone listened to eachother and took notice of the problems instead of just ignoring it.
