Ok,
This is what i stress to most of my patients that coming to the dentist is not a big deal. Life will go on. I have pulled my patients teeth before and this is what they will to. They first give you novacaine that is just a little pinch for 5 seconds. If you would like to reduce they novacaine pain to like 3 seconds ask for numbing cream, then they will tap on the tooth with is sort of like a little hammer, then they will try to pull it, then if it doesnt come out they tap it again etc. Remeber you are under novacaine and your very numb so it will NOT hurt! email me for further questions at teethdoc247@yahoo.com

Hi there,
I've had over a dozen teeth pulled, and the best thing to do is let them put you to sleep! It seems more scary than being awake, but it makes the whole thing a breeze. The first time I had some baby teeth out it was just a local freezing, it was ok. The second time they gave me IV sedation which was NOT at all effective and they ended up putting the IV in twice. The third time I was out cold for 4 impacted wisdom teeth (this was also an IV) and this was by far the best decision- you truly don't remember/feel anything.
As for the painkillers they do give you some pretty strong pills (Tylenol 3 or Demerol) but I got through without taking them- its survivable. You will really have to take it easy for a few days after and your cheeks will be VERY swollen.

I had all four of my wisdom teeth out (not at once!) and I was put to sleep the one time but not the other. The second time, I just had a local shot in my mouth which did hurt but was not by any mean excruciating. After that I felt nothing. I do think you can ask the dentist to prescribe your pain medication in liquid form. If not, an easy way to take it is to mash it up and mix it with a teaspoon of applesauce and swallow it down that way. I know it's hard not to be scared about oral surgery but it's way worse in your imagination than it's going to be in reality.

It is really not that painful. Many women, even today, give birth without pain medications. Pulling out a wisdom tooth is nothing.

If you would like to be awake during the procedure, ask the doctor to use local anaesthesia. I had an impacted wisdom tooth removed this way. The oral surgeon was afraid to use general anaesthesia, because of the medication I was taking.

When my friend got her wisdom teeth out, she wound up taking 3 valium (instead of the usual 1 for people her age) because they weren't having enough of an effect on her. I'm sure your doctor has an alternative and will do whatever they need to in order to make you comfortable.
Talk to your parents and ask them to call the doctor about it.
Best of luck!

RELAX, GETTING YOUR WISDOM TEETH PULLED IS EASY. I HAVE MINE PULLED A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO. I HAD ALL 4 PULLED AT SAME TIME. THEY DIDN'T PUT ME TO SLEEP, THEY JUST NUMBED IT. TWO OF MY TEETH WERE STILL IN THE GUMS AND TWO WERE OUT. I JUST WENT AHEAD AND HAD THEM DO ALL 4. I DIDN'T EVEN FEEL IT EVEN WHEN THE NUMB MEDICINE WORE OFF. JUST THEY REALLY BLED A LOT LIKE FOR ABOUT 2 DAYS. GOOD LUCK AND DON'T WORRY.
