If it's your passport, you know it's real because you applied for it and received it through the normal passport process. If someone else has sent you a photocopy or scan of a passport to convince you that they (she) is able to fly to visit you as soon as you send money for the ticket, the passport is NOT real and you are being scammed.

Don't want to give it all away, because that would spoil the fun....
All passports from all countries have certain similarities that must always add up. The numbers and codes are written in certain places and often repeated. Then, you always check photos, stamps, general condition of passport etc.

Using a false passport may get you many years in prison, fines, or if you're affiliated with the wrong people, a one way ticket to Guantanimo.
Go to your local post office. They will instruct you on the proper procedure or put you on the right path.

Each country has there own process of encoding items of validity, the us has a chip in the cover with all the information. Germany recently started storing digital fingerprint information on the chip in their passports.
