I have an option as an AFS student this summer. I want to really benefit from it. Not sure which one. : /

If you have a short time go to New Zealand. Being a smaller country there's not as much time wasted traveling between attractions. There's hot springs and snow topped mountains, beautiful beaches and the Maori Culture.
If you have a lot of time come to Australia. We are a large nation - bigger than Europe and nearly as big as the USA. There is everything from the sub-tropics of Far North Queensland and the Northern Territory to the Cool Temperate of Tasmania. Our history might be short, but we are big on personality.
Both Nations are friendly open people, and speak English (sort of) as a main language. You'd be welcome whichever way you choose to go. So visit us or our neighbour.

I found the cost of living in Sydney a bit more expensive than living in a North American city. The top 3 thing I reccomend you do while you're there is 1) Go to the outback and climb Ayers Rock 2) Drive the Great Ocean Road and check out the 12 Apostles 3) Dive on the Great Barrier Reef. (I dove in both Cairns and Bundaberg. Cairns was a little too touristy for me, but in Bundaburg, the diving was awesome. I've never seen so many fish)

I live in Australia and have travelled in both countries, both have good points and both have bad points. If you want a beach holiday I'd say go to Australia if you wand an out door adventure go to NZ. People in both countries a very friendly and helpful. For me the big advantage to NZ is that it is more compact.

yes we have poisonous spiders and snakes in OZ but unless you really go looking for them you probably wont find them

NZ is a good place to visit only problem they have 3.4 million sheep and every where you travel there are sheep and more sheep.
I suggest you wear gum boots as there is crap every where you go and the sheep going baa,baa gets on ones nerves, apart from that go and do the two Islands you will love NZ.

Well, New Zealand has more sheep than people which makes the populace more intelligent by far. Australia has a more varied climate, geography, and culture.
