I had to buy two dresses, so I was on a budget with each one. I bought a dress for our wedding and reception in the US (where we live) and a saree for our reception in India with my fiance's family. I wanted to spend under $800 for both combined. It was hard, but do-able. My dress for the US wedding is technically a bridesmaid dress, so it was much less expensive than a typical wedding dress. The shop was having a fantastic sale, so I was able to buy the dress, veil, and shoes for $360. We got the saree for just over $400. It also was on sale; the original price was over $1,200. Each of these things can be worn again to other formal occasions, so I don't have a problem spending almost $800 on wedding clothes. If I were getting a regular bridal gown that could only be worn once, ...$500 would be my limit.
My fiance and I had planned on footing the entire bill ourselves, and had set the above budget accordingly. However, my mom insisted on paying for my dress, and my fiance's aunt and cousins insisted on giving me the saree as a wedding gift. Very, very sweet and generous!

When I saw my dream dress in a magazine for $7,000 dollars, I started to look for a seamstress who could make the same dress for a fraction of the price and I was not able to find anyone who make it for under $3,000.
The main thing that I wanted was a dress with long sheer sleeves and there was nothing like it, so I made an appt. to David's Bridal and I tried on so many dresses all were very beautiful but not what I was looking for.
Finally I tried on a strapless beaded gorgeous dress that came with a long sleeve beaded sheer cape that covered the whole dress it was the most beautiful dress.
I spent $700.00 including the bustle and my veil.

The highest would be about $1000-1200 w/ all the alternations and such. This would be the highest I would spend before just saying no. Also, the dress would have to be AMAZING and have some quality or detailing that I couldn't find anywhere else.
I think a decent wedding dress budget is between $700-$1000 w/ alternations.

I found the most amazing site that offered hand made dresses and they were amazing, when we totalled up the cost of the dress I would have liked it came to over £3000, more than the budget for the wedding!!! That was just a bit too much for me, in the end I went for a cocktail dress that cost £180 to have made.

I spent about $450 on my wedding dress. It ended up costing me closer to $1,000 with the alterations and undergarments.
The veil is included as well here.
I had a smaller budget in mind but I fell in love with the dress. I'm glad that I went with it. I got a lot of compliments on it. (Not just about the dress but about how good it looked on me.)
It's funny how sometimes things just work out.

I spent $400 on mine. I didn't see any reason to spend tons on a dress I'm only going to wear once. It was still a little expensive but I set a $500 limit so I am happy I found "the dress" in the price range I wanted.

After doing my homework, I found that I could find many beautiful dresses for under $850. So, I put that in my head as my imaginary ceiling when I went out into the boutiques. But I got really lucky when I found my dress for $550...because I got all the corsets, petticoats and the veil that same day, and got away with everything for $840. :)

$1,000 including alterations is my desired maximum.
I've been searching and searching and found a nice dress for $350 before alterations. I want to be sure it is the best dress for me so I'll keep looking. I've found other possibles $450 - $650 before alterations as well. My goal is to pay $500 or less for the dress so that with alterations I'll come in below $1,000.
