Lots of colors go with purple: yellow, aqua, red, pink - you just have to choose the right hue.
Buy some plants to scatter around your room (either real or fake, the effect is the same). That always makes a room more lively. You can also visit thrift stores & tag sales to find some art & figurines. Different lamps can give your room a lot of character. Then go to a discount store & buy decorative throw pillows for your sofa & chairs.

You could go for a monochromatic scheme which is by just keeping everything 'purple' and using various tints (adding white to the purple paint), tones (adding grey to the purple paint) or shades (adding black to the purple paint).
If you want complementary colours you can have a diad scheme: that is, using only two colours ie violet (purple) and yellow and all the tints, tones and shades within those two groups.
Other options are:
Violet-Green-Orange: and all tints, tones and shades
Violet-Yellow Green and Orange.
Also, pay attention to your ceiling colour. The ceiling reflects light in your room so if you want the appearance of more light, make sure your ceilings are clean or repainted with a clean (but not bright) white.
You can accessorise by changing your cushion covers: have various textures, fabric patterns and colours.
Buy a new lamp or change the light shade on a current lamp.
Get rid of all unnecessary bits and bobs: Less is More!
Your floor: get a new floor mat; most ppl forget about the floor or think of it last. The floor is the anchor point in the room.
Create a sense of space by removing unnecessary or chunky furniture and invest in some flowers or a fake arrangement that isn't too bulky.

If the walls are dark purple, you can liven in up with accessories in deep orange and lime green. White trim around the windows ,baseboards, and doors will help too. Use bright or light colors on the floor, maybe an abstract area rug. For a less expensive option, buy a jute floor covering and paint it.
If your walls are lavender, you can go for a more pastel feel. You could use pastel yellows and white. Stripes and/or florals would make a romantic, cozy room.

I'd say it depends what kind of purple - royal purple (bluish) or more maroon (reddish)...
You might be able to lighten up the room and add interest using neutral colors - from light sand and taupe to chocolate. If the purple is dark, try to use more of the lighter neutral shades.
Cushions and throws in these neutral colors with interesting textures might make the room more lively and comfortable. Silk cushions, fuzzy throws, beaded lampshades (?), etc.

go glam-buy a $15 jar of pearlescent paint at the home depot. buy some painters tape. do a stripe or make a modern stencil for the corners of your room. The warmy yellow metallics will really compliment the purple.
tip-to lessen the intensity of the pearlescent paint mix it with minway polyacrylic. (sold in qts at the depot)This will also allow you to do 2 coats of pearlescent which help you avoid and cover-up flaws too.
