My daughter and I went for a walk today- I wasn't expecting to do any pictures of her, but I had my camera in my purse. She was oblivious to me being there, so I started taking a few- I think they're some of the best pictures I've ever been able to take of her. She doesn't pose well- very hyper child.

Keep in mind the lighting isn't great because I wasn't expecting to take pictures of her and it was about high noon.

This one, she was looking at a leaf-

This one, she stopped to smell flowers through the fence (I did some color editing)

This one, she perched up on the ledge and was looking off at her uncle- who must have been acting silly

Yes. And later in life, when you (and she) look at family pics, you see so much in them that you didn't see at the time. Just wait - you'll see.

Candid photos are ALWAYS the best way to take photos of children. This is why I thank God for digital photography. With my first child (who is now 13) I used to spend so much money on film trying to get a good shot, and usually I'd get 2 or 3 great ones out of each roll. Now I carry my camera with me everywhere because I never know when I might get a beautiful opportunity, but now I can snap away and not worry about the cost. Also, like you said the lighting won't always be perfect, and we are able to edit! I've had a digital camera for years, but I still get excited every time I think of it

These are beautiful!

And, yes, my dear, you've discovered the secret to taking great pictures of children.

Children are at their best, and most natural, when they're not aware that their pictures is being taken. So are adults, for that matter.

I learned this photographing my own children many years ago. And I now apply it to my grandchildren.

Talk about "Natural Beauty"! It's a kid just being a kid.

These are the images you'll cherish forever.

They, certainly, can be. Some of the BEST portraits I have ever done were candid shots. Unfortunately, clients, often, have expectations of what a portrait should look like, and, when it comes to getting paid, "the cusotmer is always right."
